Diagnostic and model for the development of the wifi based app system

For this project, there has been analysis of various models for mobile applications in the Netherlands and France.

 

Amsterdam project

Display dangerous zones of canals for ships as well as pleasure boats.

The application can be used for region that is characterized by a heavy traffic on the canals. For example, during summer time when a lot of pleasure ships navigate. Commercial ships are most often equipped by a navigation system (AIS). They are also good pilots and know well the navigation best practices. Pleasure ships rarely use AIS systems because they are expansive. They are not professional skippers and don’t know all the danger on the waterways.

The application uses maps and data on dangerous zones described in a special guidebook in form of a map. The data is transferred manually from the book to the application. The application produces and displays the map on dangerous zones for the shippers. The map is static. The application just displays on the screen the map on the book.

Functionalities for the future system

  1. Location-based data displaying on dangerous zones.
  2. Collecting of data on dangerous zones from different navigation systems and gathering it on a Dangerous Zones Data base.
  3. Gathering data from other countries.
  4. Describe each dangerous zone and make the description available for the ships.
  5. Realize some safety rule and recommendations on how to behave near each dangerous zone.
  6. Make available some services like which deck to go.

Users of the application: Pleasure boats but could be used by any ship.

Management of events on waterways

Five phases are planed for the development of this application:

  1. Develop a visual chart highlighting the waterways of France. A prototype has been developed and a first version of the application will be available and functional by the summer.
  2. Enable users to declare any event, bad or good. Event can be anything: a tree on the water, a danger, an accident, .... The evens gathered are then analyzed by the official manager who decides if they could be transmitted to the skippers.
  3. Display notices to skippers. An official process should be followed in this case. The events and notifications should be validated as mentioned in the official waterway document.
  4. Display on the chart different services that help and ease life of the ships. Services can be for example where electricity is available, where restaurants, opening time tables, etc.
  5. Displaying rest zones.

Out of scope: Dangerous zones are not considered in this application.

Users of the application: Pleasure and cargo-transport ships.

 

Eijsden-Margreten project

A mobile application providing Real time information to leisure vessels.

Two applications are being considered.

App 1

Make information on commercial vessels available for pleasure boats to help them in their navigation through the canals. The information can be on the size of the vessel, on the kind of the vessel, on its direction etc. Based on this information, pleasure boat can adapt their navigation plan. Only information on vessels in a zone of 1 km maximum around the pleasure vessel is communicated. Some constraints should be considered

  • Some legal issues should first be solved as for example what information on commercial vessels can be made public? In France this is not allowed for example.
  • The information on the vessels can be captured from the information transmitted by the AIS system of the craft. But, How to get the information will depend on how the craft has his AIS system on. In some cases, the vessels are not using the AIS system. It is not mandatory for all commercial ships.

This application is a kind of an AIS for pleasure boats. The AIS systems are very expansive and unaffordable for pleasure vessels. Still, the application is for information and not for navigation. Special attention should be given to security aspects and on how make pleasant boats aware of this distinction and aware that they should not rely only in this information in their navigation. Information is not complete since some commercial boats don't have AIS and no available information is then available on their situation.

App 2

Make information on services available to the ships and help ships find answers to their logistical problems. These can be, where can I go with my boat? Where can I eat? This application is not connected to the first one. But a link could be available. The idea is to use existing websites on services and not to redevelop the wheel.

Context/environment: A new recreation zone is being created in Margraten. The application to be developed should integrate with existing touristic applications.

Users of the application: Pleasure and cargo-transport ships.
